Lipoplasty, more commonly known as liposuction, is a procedure that isolates and sculpts fatty areas of the body such as the buttocks, back, abdomen, thighs, calves, upper arms, and other areas of the body that have stubborn fat deposits that diet and exercise cannot solve. By removing fat cells from target areas on the body, suction-assisted lipoplasty can help deliver a leaner, trimmer, better silhouette. This procedure is done for aesthetic purposes and is not a permanent weight loss solution as body fat can grow back. For best results, proper diet and exercise is recommended in order to maintain the slimmer, trimmer shape patients have after the procedure is done.

Common Methods Used in Lipoplasty

The technology used in performing lipoplasty has evolved over the years, so there are many methods surgeons can choose from. Each method uses different tools and procedures to release the fat cells for easy suction.

  • Tumescent Lipoplasty – This is considered the safest among the different methods and is used by most plastic surgeons. It involves injecting amedication into the treatment site. This solution reduces the bleeding that occurs during the procedure. The method of administering the solution into the treatment site can also be applied to other lipoplasty methods as well.
  • Suction Assisted Lipoplasty – This is the method most people are familiar with. A small incision is made near the treatment area and a thin suction tube is inserted using a back and forth motion in order to break down the fat cells for easy harvesting.
  • Ultrasound Assisted Lipoplasty – This method involves using sound waves to emulsify the fat cells before being sucked out. Suction assisted lipoplasty can also be done after to remove any fat deposits that are left behind.
  • Laser Assisted Lipoplasty – This works the same way as the ultrasound-assisted procedure; however, weak laser pulses are used to break down the fat cells instead of sound waves.

Results differ slightly from method to method and each surgeon usually has a method of choice, so be sure to discuss what option may be right for you.
