The Science Behind Laser Hair Removal

Hair is filled with a dark pigment called melanin. When the laser is fired, the laser looks for the melanin in the hair and the laser energy follows down the shaft ending at the hair root in order to hit the hair bulb.

Hair grows in three cycles.

  1. Anagen (growth phase)
  2. Catagen (phase of regression)
  3. Telogen (final resting phase.)

Only in the anagen phase does the hair have a hair bulb. If the laser energy destroys the hair bulb, then the follicle is permanently removed. At any given time on the body, 10% – 20% of the hair is in this Anagen phase. Studies have shown that on the face, every four weeks has the highest percentage of hair in this anagen growth phase and six weeks for the body. That is why, with laser hair removal, the patient must come in for a minimum of 4-6 treatments to get optimum results with 80% – 90% hair reduction.

Some patients may require more treatments due to the amount of hair in the area being treated. Come in for your free consultation with one of our medical professionals so we can tailor a plan that is best for you.

What to Expect with Laser Hair Removal Treatment

One Laser Hair Removal session is not enough to get rid all the unwanted hair. Before going through the procedure, patients must understand that this is an ongoing process requiring several sessions in order to get the best results. Facial treatments are typically done in four week intervals, while treatments from the neck down are done in six-week intervals until most, if not all of the unwanted hair is removed.

Laser Hair Removal is relatively a painless procedure; however a mild stinging sensation can be felt when the laser hits the skin. For people with sensitive skin, we can apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to reduce any discomfort they may feel during the course of the treatment. After each session, slight redness and swelling may occur. These side effects may last from one to three days, but aside from that, there is no downtime associated with this treatment. One can go back to work immediately after undergoing a Laser Hair Removal treatment with us.

The cost of our Laser Hair Removal would depend on the size of the treatment area. For more information about our Laser Hair Removal services or to schedule an appointment, contact us today.
