Breast Removal Surgery (Gynecomastia)

When men develop female-like breasts, this condition is called gynecomastia. This condition is quite common; however, it usually causes embarrassment to patients with this condition which is why people rarely talk about it. The breast enlargement in men is caused by a hormonal imbalance and is prevalent in teenage boys aged 14-15. It doesn’t pose a serious health threat, but it can cause the patient to feel embarrassed and have low-self esteem. In some cases, the condition may go away on its own, but breast removal surgery is also a good option to remove the breasts on teenage boys and men. Overweight boys and men who have a lot of fat deposits on their chests may also appear to have breasts, but this is not considered the same condition and should not be confused as such.

Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is considered an out-patient procedure and can be done in the hospital operating room or in an out-patient surgical facility. The patient is often discharged several hours after the procedure, but in some cases the patient may have to stay at the hospital overnight. This procedure takes roughly about an hour and a half to perform, but it could take longer depending on the extent of the work that needs to be done.

General anesthesia is normally administered before the operation; however, local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is also an option. The methods used to remove male breasts are determined during the consultation session. Enlarged breasts that are mostly made up of fat deposits (pseudogynecomastia) can be treated using liposuction. The presence of excess glandular tissues means that the surgeon would need to perform a surgical procedure to excise these tissues. Liposuction can also be done in cases where there’s a mix of fatty and glandular tissues present in the enlarged breasts.

With gynecomastia surgery, the surgeon makes an incision around the areola or in the underarm area. Using an endoscope as a guide, the surgeon uses a small scalpel to cut away the excess skin, fat, and glandular tissues. If there’s a significant amount of skin and tissue to be removed, then a larger incision is made. Liposuction can also be done in conjunction with this procedure for better results.
